天照大神と須佐之男命 “Great Ama-terasu and Susa-no-o-no-mikoto”

3.須佐之男命の勝さび “Susa-no-o-no-mikoto Victorious”

Hereat Haya-susa-no-o-no-mikoto said to Great Ama-terasu, “My heart has proved to be loyal and honest.  Therefore I have begot the gentle female deities.  This naturally means it is I that have won.”  Due to his victory, he got too arrogant and rowdy, then he broke the ridges between Great Ama-terasu’s rice fields, filled the water channels with earth, and he scattered his feces about in the sacred dining palace where the year’s new crops are served for Great Ama-terasu.  At this, actually, she did not blame him for what he did but said, “He did not scatter his feces but just vomited here and there because of too much drinking.  This would be what my brother did.  And the reason why he broke the ridges and filled the water channels with earth would be that he has found those places could be changed into further croplands.  What my brother did was this,” thus spoke she better of him but he never stopped his wrong doings, in fact it became worse and worse.   It happened one day that Great Ama-terasu, in her sacred weaving house, had her weavers weaving the garments dedicated to the Deities, when he came on to the roof of the weaving house and broke a hole in it, and skinning a heavenly horse from the rump, threw it down through the hole.  So astounded at this, some weavers of Great Ama-terasu were hit in the lower stomach with the shuttle, leading to a sudden, unexpected death.
